Breakfast by the Sea

21 After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. 3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”

They said to him, “We are going with you also.” They went out and [a]immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 Then Jesus said to them, “Children, have you any food?”

They answered Him, “No.”

6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea. 8 But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. 9 Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. 10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish which you have just caught.”

11 Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and eat breakfast.” Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, “Who are You?”—knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

14 This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

Jesus Restores Peter

15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of [b]Jonah, do you love Me more than these?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [c]love You.”

He said to him, “Feed My lambs.”

16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of [d]Jonah, do you love Me?”

He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I [e]love You.”

He said to him, “Tend My sheep.”

17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of [f]Jonah, do you [g]love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?”

And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.”

Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.”

The Beloved Disciple and His Book

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?”

22 Jesus said to him, “If I [h]will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

23 Then this saying went out among the brethren that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you?”

24 This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

25 And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.

Aparición junto al lago

21 Poco después, se apareció Jesús de nuevo a sus discípulos junto al lago de Tiberíades. El hecho ocurrió así: 2 estaban juntos Simón Pedro, Tomás “el Mellizo”, Natanael el de Caná de Galilea, los hijos de Zebedeo y otros dos discípulos. 3 Pedro les dijo:

— Me voy a pescar.

Los otros le contestaron:

— Vamos también nosotros contigo.

Salieron, pues, y subieron a la barca; pero aquella noche no lograron pescar nada. 4 Ya amanecía cuando se presentó Jesús a la orilla del lago, aunque los discípulos no lo reconocieron. 5 Jesús les dijo:

— Muchachos, ¿habéis pescado algo?

Ellos contestaron:

— No.

6 Él les dijo:

— Echad la red al lado derecho de la barca y encontraréis pescado.

Así lo hicieron, y la red se llenó de tal cantidad de peces, que apenas podían moverla. 7 El discípulo a quien Jesús tanto quería dijo entonces a Pedro:

— ¡Es el Señor!

Al oír Simón Pedro que era el Señor, se puso la túnica (pues estaba sólo con la ropa de pescar) y se lanzó al agua. 8 Los otros discípulos, como la distancia que los separaba de tierra era sólo de unos cien metros, llegaron a la orilla en la barca, arrastrando la red llena de peces. 9 Cuando llegaron a tierra, vieron un buen rescoldo de brasas, con un pescado sobre ellas, y pan. 10 Jesús les dijo:

— Traed algunos de los peces que acabáis de pescar.

11 Simón Pedro subió a la barca y sacó a tierra la red llena de peces; en total eran ciento cincuenta y tres peces grandes. Y, a pesar de ser tantos, no se rompió la red. 12 Jesús les dijo:

— Acercaos y comed.

A ninguno de los discípulos se le ocurrió preguntar: “¿Quién eres tú?”, porque sabían muy bien que era el Señor. 13 Jesús, por su parte, se acercó, tomó el pan y se lo repartió; y lo mismo hizo con los peces.

14 Esta fue la tercera vez que Jesús se apareció a sus discípulos después de haber resucitado.

Jesús y Pedro

15 Terminada la comida, Jesús preguntó a Pedro:

— Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas más que estos?

Pedro le contestó:

— Sí, Señor, tú sabes que te quiero.

Jesús le dijo:

— Apacienta mis corderos.

16 Jesús volvió a preguntarle:

— Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?

Pedro respondió:

— Sí, Señor, tú sabes que te quiero.

Jesús le dijo:

— Cuida de mis ovejas.

17 Por tercera vez le preguntó Jesús:

— Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me quieres?

Pedro se entristeció al oír que le preguntaba por tercera vez si lo quería, y contestó:

— Señor, tú lo sabes todo, tú sabes que te quiero.

Entonces Jesús le dijo:

— Apacienta mis ovejas.

18 Y añadió:

— Te aseguro que cuando eras más joven, tú mismo te ajustabas la túnica con el cinturón e ibas a donde querías; pero, cuando seas viejo, tendrás que extender los brazos y será otro quien te atará y te conducirá a donde no quieras ir.

19 Jesús se expresó en estos términos para indicar la clase de muerte con la que Pedro daría gloria a Dios. Acto seguido dijo:

— Sígueme.

El discípulo amado

20 Pedro se volvió y vio que detrás de ellos venía el discípulo a quien Jesús tanto quería, el mismo que en la cena se había recostado sobre el pecho de Jesús y le había preguntado: “Señor, ¿quién es el que va a traicionarte?”. 21 Al verlo, Pedro preguntó a Jesús:

— Señor, y este, ¿qué suerte correrá?

22 Jesús le contestó:

— Si yo quiero que él quede hasta que yo vuelva, ¿a ti qué? Tú sígueme.

23 Estas palabras dieron pie para que entre los hermanos circulase el rumor de que este discípulo no iba a morir. Sin embargo, Jesús no dijo a Pedro que este discípulo no moriría; simplemente dijo: “Si yo quiero que él quede hasta que yo vuelva, ¿a ti qué?”.

Conclusión

24 Este discípulo es el mismo que da testimonio de todas estas cosas y las ha escrito. Y nosotros sabemos que dice la verdad.

25 Jesús hizo además otras muchas cosas; tantas que, si se intentara ponerlas por escrito una por una, pienso que ni en el mundo entero cabrían los libros que podrían escribirse.
