Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough

Lesson 6

Dr.Diana Brevan

The Samuel Fast

Isaiah 58:6-8 KJV Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? [7] Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? When thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? [8] Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.

1 Samuel 7:1-12 KJV And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD. [2] And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD. [3] And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines. [4] Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only. [5] And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD. [6] And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh. [7] And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. [8] And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines. [9] And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him. [10] And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. [11] And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar. [12] Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us.

l. INTRODUCTION -- FASTING LEADS TO REVIVAL

Throughout history some of the greatest revivals have been spawned by fasting. One of the most remarkable and famous sermons ever preached in the history of our nation was delivered by the Puritan, Jonathon Edwards. He preached a message entitled “Sinners In The Hands of an Angry God.” Prior to delivering this message, Edwards fasted for 24 hours before preaching this message. There are many historians who feel that this message was actually the stimulus for the Great Awakening in the New England states.

The state of the times extremely requires a fullness of the divine Spirit in ministers, and we ought to give ourselves no rest till we have obtained it. And in order to [do] this, I should think ministers, above all persons, ought to be much in secret prayer and fasting, and also much in praying and fasting one with another. It seems to me it would be becoming the circumstances of the present day, if ministers in a neighborhood would often meet together and spend days in fasting and fervent prayer among themselves, earnestly seeking for those extraordinary supplies of divine grace from heaven, that we need at this day. Jonathon Edwards, Some Thoughts Concerning the Revival

The time frame for this Great Awakening was the 1730-40’s. During that period of time a young man by the name of David Brainerd was born on April 20, 1718, in Haddam, Connecticut. Several very prominent men were alive at that time. John Wesley and Jonathon Edwards turned fourteen that year. Benjamin Franklin turned twelve and George Whitfield turned three. The Great Awakening was just on the horizon.

Brainerd would die at a very premature age of twenty-nine from tuberculosis in the home of Jonathon Edwards. He was a young man who had literally spent his life and health trying to reach into the lives of the American Indians. Jonathon Edwards took very painstaking measures to entirely re-copy and publish the diary of Brainerd. Scattered throughout his journal (I recommend that you pick up a copy and read it sometime) there are several references that one will find to his belief in the power of fasting and the records of his fasting.

Monday, April 19. I set apart this day for fasting and prayer to God for his grace, especially to prepare me for the work of the ministry, to give me divine aid and direction in my preparations for that great work, and in his own time to ‘send me into his harvest.’ Accordingly, in morning, endeavored to plead for the divine presence for the day, and not without some life. In the forenoon, I felt a power of intercession for precious immortal souls, for the advancement of the kingdom of my dear Lord and Savior in the world; and withal, a most sweet resignation, and even consolation and joy in the thoughts of suffering, hardships, distresses, and even death itself, in the promotion of it; and had special enlargement in pleading for the enlightening and conversion of the poor heathen.

I certainly believe that this sort of fasting has the ability to assist us to become what God longs for us to become. Fasting is a process that helps us to endure and to overcome the hardships of this world because it forces the focus on the one to come.

In 1859, another revival began to make its way through the nation. This occurred about the time that Charles Finney bean to work as an evangelist. It primarily started with those who worked in factories. When the lunch whistle blew, these workers would go to area churches and begin to pray that God would send a revival to the nation. Since they were spending their lunch time in prayer, many did not eat and great results came from this time of fasting and prayer. There, particular things were noted during this fast. First, there was a great promotion and embracing of unity. Secondly, the revival came through prayer and fasting. Thirdly, this revival was primarily undertaken by the laity and not by ministers.

Ll. THE SAMUEL FAST

The Disciples Fast was a fast that was focused more inwardly on one’s personal walk with God and overcoming strongholds in their lives. The Samuel Fast turns outward and involves itself with the restoration, renewal, and revival of the church.

When should we get involved in the Samuel Fast? Understanding that this fasting is for the purpose of revival, Charles Finney during his day (1850-60’s), asked the question, “When is a revival needed in the churches and among Christians?” and with a very pointed list of answers to that question:

• A revival is needed when there is a lack of brotherly love and Christian camaraderie among professors of religion.

• When there is dissension and jealousy and evil speaking among professors of religion, there is a great need for revival.

• When there is a worldly spirit in the church, when Christians begin to conform to the world in all manner of dress, language, and entertainment, there is need of a revival.

• When the church finds its members succumbing to sin and decay, then it is time for the church to awake and cry to God for revival.

• When there is a spirit of controversy in the church or in the land, a revival is needful.

• When unbelievers revile the church and triumph over it, then it is time to seek for a true revival.

• When Christians are careless of their actions and become unconcerned about their consequences, it is time for the church to stir itself to accountability and awaken to see the lost all around.

Finney paints a very good picture of when a revival is necessary. A church, country or nation that needs revival will betray itself with its actions. When revival makes its way into our lives a lot in the spiritual atmosphere can change almost overnight. When we begin to think about revival there are several things that are understood about revival:

• Revival is not an automatic experience. It is something to be desired and prayed for.

• God is the source of all real revival and it comes only from His presence.

• Revival has a way of bring back very refreshing results to a church and personal lives.

• Revival will bring a powerful sense of awe in our lives for God.

• Revival restores a love for holiness.

• Revival gives us a great conviction for sin.

• Revival restores a great fervor in prayer.

• Revival facilitates both spiritual and numerical growth in churches.

• Revival breaks the power of the world and the squeeze of sin on the lives of saints.

Isaiah 58:6 indicates that there is a fast that will allow the “oppressed” to go free. The word can also be understood as “broken.” Our society is filled to capacity with those who are broken in spirit and bound and held hostage by sin.

A. The History Behind the Samuel Fast

The children of Israel found a trend during the times of the Judges. They found that it was easy to reject the Lord and pursue idols. When this would occur the Lord would punish Israel by allowing other nations war with them. Not only would there be battles and wars to be involved in, Israel was frequently on the losing side.

Every time that they were defeated they would attempt to redirect their efforts and turn back to the Lord. During this period of time, God used a man named Samuel who would play a very prominent role in the shaping of Israel. He served the role of a prophet, priest, and judge and would be the last man to lead Israel before a monarchy was set up.

During this time, Israel lost the Ark of the Covenant while they are attempting to use it in warfare as a good luck piece. God allowed Israel to lose the battle to the Philistines. The Philistines killed a large amount of soldiers and took the Ark away from Israel. Once this occurred, Israel was placed under great oppressive action from the Philistines. Every year they would come and force Israel to pay very high taxes. Samuel was used greatly of God to help them to overcome this practice. He inspired Israel’s army to fight against her enemies, who were raiding the nation.

Because Israel had lost the visible presence of God that was embodied in the Ark’s presence, Samuel helped them to see the need to return the Ark and presence of God (1 Sam. 7:1). The name Ichabod was written on Israel and they had to recognize His absence of power and presence in their lives.

After they had acknowledged they had lost the power and anointing of God, Samuel required another step toward revival and this was to meet at the house of the Lord. He gathered them to Mizpeh. This is a crucial key toward experiencing corporate revival, we must willingly assemble together and allow God to meld our spirits into His Spirit.

Everyone stands on equal footing at the Cross; however, the leaders of the congregation—its shepherds—have a special role to fulfill in the Samuel Fast. They must lead the flock as an example to feed and protect the sheep (Acts 20:28-31).

The Bible emphasizes a great need for leaders. Common people, gifted people and royalty have all been effective leaders among God’s people. The fact of the matter is that God uses all kinds and types of people. Yet, much of Biblical history flows through leaders—their lives, their works, their calls, their successes, and even their failures. For revival to occur during this time of fasting and prayer, those who are leaders must pray for God to raise up leaders and pray for God to use the existing leaders who are already in place.

B. Conducting the Samuel Fast

There are several steps that we find throughout 1 Samuel 7 that indicates a pattern to follow during this time of fasting and prayer.

• STEP 1: Call the Body Together

1 Samuel 7:5 KJV And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.

The results of individual and corporate fasting are distinctly different from each other. When a person embarks on a fast, he is submitting himself individually to God. Corporate fasting makes a person responsible for what God does for the entire Church. When a Church comes together to fast or when a small group may come together to fast, then God will answer the corporate prayer and fasting effort.

When we come together for a time of fasting and praying then we realize that we have an obligation to each other. This action creates a sense of responsibility because now the burdens of life, of growth, of vision, of revival, and of distress are willingly shared with others. Samuel was creating a powerful sense of unity among the children of Israel. He was unifying their mind, heart, and vision into one. Fasting was a very good way to bring the people together in unity.

What could happen if this church would come together in a time of anointed prayer and fasting for lost children? What could happen to our individual relationships with God if we were able to feel the distress of marital conflicts, family dissensions, financial pressures, and spiritual warfare among those with whom we are brothers and sisters in the Lord? What would happen if the problem across the aisle or on the pew in front of you could be assimilated into your heart?

Galatians 6:2 KJV Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Romans 15:1 KJV We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.

• STEP 2: Demonstrate True Repentance

If simply a public gathering were the only thing necessary for a revival to occur then we would be blessed with revival every time that we met. But this simply is not the only condition. We must have a spirit of repentance about us. This is often one of the most challenging things that we will have to do in our walk with God. The reason is because when we begin to repent, we are actually telling God that there is something amiss in our lives and that He must cleanse us. How much our flesh and our carnal (earthly, foolish, darkened) minds resist such thoughts.

1 Samuel 7:2 KJV And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.

The glory had departed twenty years ago and now the culmination of all of the trouble had finally caused them to really take notice of their situation. So much water under the bridge had been bitter water. Their entire nation was feeling the effects of their godless ways. Yet, there is a great lesson that is illustrated here: Repentance is far more than tears and loud lamentations. Real repentance will always have some action with it. This principle is illustrated in the very next verse in this setting.

1 Samuel 7:3 KJV And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.

True repentance requires that some things be “put away.”

The New Living Translation -- “Get rid of your foreign gods.”

Knox -- “Rid yourselves of all alien gods.”

The Message -- “Get rid of the foreign gods and fertility goddesses, ground yourselves firmly in God.”
