Searching the Scriptures with Deacon Matthew 6-6-24
Turn to Jeremiah 14:19-22
19 Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? Hath thy soul lothed Zion? Why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble!
20 We acknowledge, O Lord, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.
21 Do not abhor us, for thy name’s sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.
22 Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Art not thou he, O Lord our God? Therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.
As we conclude Chapter 14, Jeremiah is talking with God and asking God questions like, if he has rejected the tribe of Judah and dislike the region of Zion? Why are you plaguing us and not offering healing? We are seeking peace, but there is none available. There was a time of healing, more trouble came to the land of Judah.
Jeremiah is admitting that some are aware of the wickedness in the land and the sins done by the forefathers of yesterday Jeremiah plead with God in verse 21 that they acknowledge God and not to disgrace of the tribe of Judah that David despite the disobedience by the wicked kings. Unlike Israel, Judah did have some that follow the leading of God during their reign and some did in partiality. Jeremiah also did not want the Davidic covenant broken, but the throne and the covenant brought the Savior, Jesus Christ about 580 years later.
Jeremiah then asked if the vanity of the Gentiles can bring rain and the answer is no, God is the only one that could end the drought. Jeremiah pleaded for the showers to come from Heaven. Meanwhile, Jeremiah remained faithful by acknowledging that God makes all things.
