Proverbs 6

Dangerous Promises

6 My son, if you become [a]surety for your friend,If you have [b]shaken hands in pledge for a stranger,2 You are snared by the words of your mouth;You are taken by the words of your mouth.3 So do this, my son, and deliver yourself;For you have come into the hand of your friend:Go and humble yourself;Plead with your friend.4 Give no sleep to your eyes,Nor slumber to your eyelids.5 Deliver yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,And like a bird from the hand of the [c]fowler.

The Folly of Indolence

6 Go to the ant, you sluggard!Consider her ways and be wise,7 Which, having no [d]captain,Overseer or ruler,8 Provides her [e]supplies in the summer,And gathers her food in the harvest.9 How long will you [f]slumber, O sluggard?When will you rise from your sleep?10 A little sleep, a little slumber,A little folding of the hands to sleep—11 So shall your poverty come on you like a prowler,And your need like an armed man.

The Wicked Man

12 A worthless person, a wicked man,Walks with a perverse mouth;13 He winks with his eyes,He [g]shuffles his feet,He points with his fingers;14 Perversity is in his heart,He devises evil continually,He sows discord.15 Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly;Suddenly he shall be broken without remedy.

16 These six things the Lord hates,Yes, seven are an abomination to [h]Him:17 A[i] proud look,A lying tongue,Hands that shed innocent blood,18 A heart that devises wicked plans,Feet that are swift in running to evil,19 A false witness who speaks lies,And one who sows discord among brethren.

Beware of Adultery

20 My son, keep your father’s command,And do not forsake the law of your mother.21 Bind them continually upon your heart;Tie them around your neck.22 When you roam, [j]they will lead you;When you sleep, they will keep you;And when you awake, they will speak with you.23 For the commandment is a lamp,And the law a light;Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,24 To keep you from the evil woman,From the flattering tongue of a seductress.25 Do not lust after her beauty in your heart,Nor let her allure you with her eyelids.26 For by means of a harlotA man is reduced to a crust of bread;And [k]an adulteress will prey upon his precious life.27 Can a man take fire to his bosom,And his clothes not be burned?28 Can one walk on hot coals,And his feet not be seared?29 So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife;Whoever touches her shall not be innocent.

30 People do not despise a thiefIf he steals to satisfy himself when he is starving.31 Yet when he is found, he must restore sevenfold;He may have to give up all the substance of his house.32 Whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding;He who does so destroys his own soul.33 Wounds and dishonor he will get,And his reproach will not be wiped away.34 For jealousy is a husband’s fury;Therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.35 He will [l]accept no recompense,Nor will he be appeased though you give many gifts.

Advertencias contra la pereza y la mentira

6 Hijo mío, si sales fiador por tu amigo,y empeñas tu palabra en favor de un extraño,2 te has enredado con tus propias palabras;¡eres cautivo de tus propias promesas!3 Hijo mío, has caído en manos de tu prójimo.Para librarte, tienes que hacer lo siguiente:Ve a hablar con tu prójimo, y humíllate ante él.4 No te des un momento de reposo;no cierres los ojos ni te duermas.5 Sé como gacela, y escápate del cazador;sé como un ave, y líbrate del que pone trampas.

6 Perezoso, mira a las hormigas;fíjate en sus caminos, y ponte a pensar.7 Ellas no tienen quien las mande,ni quien les dé órdenes ni las gobierne.8 Preparan su comida en el verano,y en el tiempo de la siega recogen su comida.9 Perezoso, ¿cuánto más seguirás durmiendo?¿Cuándo vas a despertar de tu sueño?10 Un poco de dormir, un poco de soñar,un poco de cruzarse de brazos para descansar,11 y así vendrán tu necesidad y tu pobreza:como un vago, como un mercenario.

12 El que es malvado y canallasiempre anda diciendo cosas perversas;13 guiña los ojos, mueve los pies,hace señas con los dedos;14 en su corazón sólo hay perversidad,y todo el tiempo anda pensando en el mal.¡Siempre anda sembrando discordias!15 Por eso, cuando menos lo espere,le sobrevendrá la ruina sin que pueda evitarlo.

16 Hay seis, y hasta siete cosasque el Señor detesta con toda el alma:17 Los ojos altivos, la lengua mentirosa,las manos que derraman sangre inocente,18 la mente que maquina planes inicuos,los pies que se apresuran a hacer el mal,19 el testigo falso que propaga mentiras,y el que siembra discordia entre hermanos.

Advertencia contra el adulterio

20 Hijo mío, cumple el mandamiento de tu padre,y no te apartes de la enseñanza de tu madre.21 Llévalos siempre dentro de tu corazón;pórtalos alrededor de tu cuello.22 Serán tu guía cuando camines,te protegerán cuando duermas,y te hablarán cuando despiertes.23 El mandamiento es lámpara,la enseñanza es luz,y las reprensiones son el camino de la vida.24 Te librarán de la mujer malvada,de la lengua sutil de la mujer ajena.25 No codicies en tu corazón su hermosura,ni dejes que ella te atrape con sus miradas,26 Una ramera te cuesta un bocado de pan,pero la mujer ajena te puede costar la vida.27 ¿Quién se echa fuego en el pechosin que se queme su ropa?28 ¿Quién puede andar sobre brasassin que se quemen sus pies?29 ¡Pues tampoco puede clamar inocenciael que se acuesta con la mujer de su prójimo!30 Nadie desprecia al que roba,si lo hace para calmar su apetito;31 si lo sorprenden, debe pagar siete vecesy entregar todo el patrimonio de su casa,32 pero cometer adulterio es no tener cabeza;quien adultera, se corrompe a sí mismo,33 lo que obtiene son golpes y vergüenza,y nunca logra borrar esa mancha.34 Los celos despiertan la ira del hombre,y en el día de la venganza éste no perdona;35 no perdona ni se da por satisfecho,aunque se l
