Proverbs 17

The Lord Tests Hearts

17 Better is a dry morsel with quietness,

Than a house full of [a]feasting with strife.

2 A wise servant will rule over a son who causes shame,

And will share an inheritance among the brothers.

3 The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,

But the Lord tests the hearts.

4 An evildoer gives heed to false lips;

A liar listens eagerly to a [b]spiteful tongue.

5 He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker;

He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished.

6 Children’s children are the crown of old men,

And the glory of children is their father.

7 Excellent speech is not becoming to a fool,

Much less lying lips to a prince.

8 A present is a precious stone in the eyes of its possessor;

Wherever he turns, he prospers.

9 He who covers a transgression seeks love,

But he who repeats a matter separates friends.

10 Rebuke is more effective for a wise man

Than a hundred blows on a fool.

11 An evil man seeks only rebellion;

Therefore a cruel messenger will be sent against him.

12 Let a man meet a bear robbed of her cubs,

Rather than a fool in his folly.

13 Whoever rewards evil for good,

Evil will not depart from his house.

14 The beginning of strife is like releasing water;

Therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts.

15 He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the just,

Both of them alike are an abomination to the Lord.

16 Why is there in the hand of a fool the purchase price of wisdom,

Since he has no heart for it?

17 A friend loves at all times,

And a brother is born for adversity.

18 A man devoid of [c]understanding [d]shakes hands in a pledge,

And becomes [e]surety for his friend.

19 He who loves transgression loves strife,

And he who exalts his gate seeks destruction.

20 He who has a [f]deceitful heart finds no good,

And he who has a perverse tongue falls into evil.

21 He who begets a scoffer does so to his sorrow,

And the father of a fool has no joy.

22 A merry heart [g]does good, like medicine,

But a broken spirit dries the bones.

23 A wicked man accepts a bribe [h]behind the back

To pervert the ways of justice.

24 Wisdom is in the sight of him who has understanding,

But the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.

25 A foolish son is a grief to his father,

And bitterness to her who bore him.

26 Also, to punish the righteous is not good,

Nor to strike princes for their uprightness.

27 He who has knowledge spares his words,

And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.

28 Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace;

When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.

17 Mejor es un bocado seco

y con tranquilidad

que una casa llena de banquetes con contiendas.

2 El siervo prudente se enseñoreará sobre el hijo que avergüenza,

y junto con los hermanos compartirá la herencia.

3 El crisol prueba la plata, y la hornaza el oro;

pero el que prueba los corazones

es el SEÑOR.

4 El malhechor está atento al labio inicuo, y el mentiroso escucha a la lengua destructora.

5 El que se mofa del pobre afrenta

a su Hacedor,

y el que se alegra por su calamidad no quedará impune.

6 Corona de los ancianos son los hijos

de los hijos,

y la gloria de los hijos son sus padres.

7 No conviene al hombre vil la grandilocuencia.

Cuánto menos al noble

el labio mentiroso.

8 Piedra de encanto es el soborno a los ojos del que lo practica;

dondequiera se dirija tiene éxito.

9 El que cubre la transgresión

busca amistad,

pero el que divulga el asunto

aparta al amigo.

10 Más aprovecha una reprensión

al hombre entendido,

que cien azotes al necio.

11 El malo solo busca la rebelión;

un mensajero cruel será enviado contra él.

12 Mejor es encontrarse con una osa despojada de sus crías

que con un necio empeñado

en su insensatez.

13 Al que da mal por bien,

el mal no se apartará de su casa.

14 El que comienza la contienda es quien suelta las aguas;

desiste, pues, antes que estalle el pleito.

15 El que justifica al impío y el que condena al justo,

ambos son abominables al SEÑOR.

16 ¿De qué sirve el dinero en la mano del necio

para adquirir sabiduría, si no tiene entendimiento?

17 En todo tiempo ama el amigo,

y el hermano nace para el tiempo

de angustia.

18 El hombre falto de entendimiento

estrecha la mano,

dando fianza en presencia de su amigo.

19 El que ama la transgresión

ama las contiendas,

y el que se enaltece busca la ruina.

20 El perverso de corazón nunca hallará el bien,

y el de doble lengua caerá en el mal.

21 Quien engendra al necio lo hace para su tristeza,

y el padre del insensato no se alegrará.

22 El corazón alegre mejora la salud, pero un espíritu abatido seca los huesos.

23 El impío toma soborno de su seno para pervertir las sendas del derecho.

24 La sabiduría se refleja en la cara del hombre entendido,

pero los ojos del necio vagan hasta

el extremo de la tierra.

25 El hijo necio causa enojo a su padre

y amargura a la que le dio a luz.

26 Ciertamente no es bueno imponer una multa al justo

ni golpear a los nobles a causa

de su integridad.

27 El que tiene conocimiento refrena sus palabras,

y el de espíritu sereno es hombre prudente.

28 Cuando calla, hasta el insensato

es tenido por sabio;

y el que cierra sus labios,

por inteligente.
