Job 25-28

Bildad: How Can Man Be Righteous?

25 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered and said:

2 “Dominion and fear belong to Him;He makes peace in His high places.3 [a]Is there any number to His armies?Upon whom does His light not rise?4 How then can man be righteous before God?Or how can he be pure who is born of a woman?5 If even the moon does not shine,And the stars are not pure in His sight,6 How much less man, who is a maggot,And a son of man, who is a worm?”

Job: Man’s Frailty and God’s Majesty

26 But Job answered and said:

2 “How have you helped him who is without power?How have you saved the arm that has no strength?3 How have you counseled one who has no wisdom?And how have you declared sound advice to many?4 To whom have you uttered words?And whose spirit came from you?

5 “The dead tremble,Those under the waters and those inhabiting them.6 Sheol is naked before Him,And Destruction has no covering.7 He stretches out the north over empty space;He hangs the earth on nothing.8 He binds up the water in His thick clouds,Yet the clouds [b]are not broken under it.9 He covers the face of His throne,And spreads His cloud over it.10 He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters,At the boundary of light and darkness.11 The pillars of heaven tremble,And are [c]astonished at His rebuke.12 He stirs up the sea with His power,And by His understanding He breaks up [d]the storm.13 By His Spirit He adorned the heavens;His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.14 Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways,And how small a whisper we hear of Him!But the thunder of His power who can understand?”

Job Maintains His Integrity

27 Moreover Job continued his discourse, and said:

2 “As God lives, who has taken away my justice,And the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter,3 As long as my breath is in me,And the breath of God in my nostrils,4 My lips will not speak wickedness,Nor my tongue utter deceit.5 Far be it from meThat I should say you are right;Till I die I will not put away my integrity from me.6 My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go;My heart shall not [e]reproach me as long as I live.

7 “May my enemy be like the wicked,And he who rises up against me like the unrighteous.8 For what is the hope of the hypocrite,Though he may gain much,If God takes away his life?9 Will God hear his cryWhen trouble comes upon him?10 Will he delight himself in the Almighty?Will he always call on God?

11 “I will teach you [f]about the hand of God;What is with the Almighty I will not conceal.12 Surely all of you have seen it;Why then do you behave with complete nonsense?

13 “This is the portion of a wicked man with God,And the heritage of oppressors, received from the Almighty:14 If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword;And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.15 Those who survive him shall be buried in death,And their[g] widows shall not weep,16 Though he heaps up silver like dust,And piles up clothing like clay—17 He may pile it up, but the just will wear it,And the innocent will divide the silver.18 He builds his house like a [h]moth,Like a [i]booth which a watchman makes.19 The rich man will lie down,[j]But not be gathered up;He opens his eyes,And he is no more.20 Terrors overtake him like a flood;A tempest steals him away in the night.21 The east wind carries him away, and he is gone;It sweeps him out of his place.22 It hurls against him and does not spare;He flees desperately from its [k]power.23 Men shall clap their hands at him,And shall hiss him out of his place.

Job’s Discourse on Wisdom

28 “Surely there is a mine for silver,And a place where gold is refined.2 Iron is taken from the [l]earth,And copper is smelted from ore.3 Man puts an end to darkness,And searches every recessFor ore in the darkness and the shadow of death.4 He breaks open a shaft away from people;In places forgotten by feetThey hang far away from men;They swing to and fro.5 As for the earth, from it comes bread,But underneath it is turned up as by fire;6 Its stones are the source of sapphires,And it contains gold dust.7 That path no bird knows,Nor has the falcon’s eye seen it.8 The [m]proud lions have not trodden it,Nor has the fierce lion passed over it.9 He puts his hand on the flint;He overturns the mountains [n]at the roots.10 He cuts out channels in the rocks,And his eye sees every precious thing.11 He dams up the streams from trickling;What is hidden he brings forth to light.

12 “But where can wisdom be found?And where is the place of understanding?13 Man does not know its value,Nor is it found in the land of the living.14 The deep says, ‘It is not in me’;And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’15 It cannot be purchased for gold,Nor can silver be weighed for its price.16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,In precious onyx or sapphire.17 Neither gold nor crystal can equal it,Nor can it be exchanged for [o]jewelry of fine gold.18 No mention shall be made of [p]coral or quartz,For the price of wisdom is above rubies.19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it,Nor can it be valued in pure gold.

20 “From where then does wisdom come?And where is the place of understanding?21 It is hidden from the eyes of all living,And concealed from the birds of the [q]air.22 Destruction[r] and Death say,‘We have heard a report about it with our ears.’23 God understands its way,And He knows its place.24 For He looks to the ends of the earth,And sees under the whole heavens,25 To establish a weight for the wind,And apportion the waters by measure.26 When He made a law for the rain,And a path for the thunderbolt,27 Then He saw [s]wisdom and declared it;He prepared it, indeed, He searched it out.28 And to man He said,‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,And to depart from evil is understanding.’ ”

y dijo:

2 —El dominio y el terror son de Dios;él hace la paz en sus alturas.3 ¿Tienen número sus tropas?¿Sobre quién no se levanta su luz?4 ¿Cómo puede el hombre ser justo ante Dios?¿Cómo será limpio el que nace de mujer?5 Si ni la misma luna le resplandeceni aun las estrellas son puras ante sus ojos,6 ¡cuánto menos el hombre,que es una larva;el ser humano, que es un gusano!

Job responde a Bildad

26 Entonces respondió Job y dijo:

2 —¿En qué has ayudado al que no tiene poder,o librado al brazo que no tiene fuerza?3 ¿Qué has aconsejado al que no tienesabiduría?¿Qué sano conocimiento has enseñado en plenitud?4 ¿Con la ayuda de quién has expresado palabras,y de quién es el espíritu que habla en ti?5 »Tiemblan las sombras de los muertos debajo de las aguas y de los que las habitan.6 El Seol está desnudo delante de Dios,y el Abadón[a] no tiene cubierta.7 Él despliega el norte sobre el vacíoy suspende la tierra sobre la nada.8 Él encierra las aguas en sus nubes,y las nubes no se rompen a causade ellas.9 Él cubre la faz de la luna llenay sobre ella extiende una nube.10 Él trazó el horizonte sobre la faz delas aguashasta el límite de la luz con las tinieblas.11 Las columnas de los cielos se estremecen y están atónitas ante su reprensión.12 Él aquietó el mar con su poder,y con su entendimiento aniquilóa Rahab[b].13 Con su soplo despejó los cielos,y su mano atravesó a la serpiente furtiva[c].14 »He aquí, estos son tan solo los bordes de sus caminos.¡Cuán leve murmullo hemos oído de él! Pero el trueno de su poderío, ¿quién lo podrá comprender?

27 Job continuó su discurso y dijo:

2 —¡Vive Dios, quien ha quitadomi derecho;y el Todopoderoso, que ha amargado mi alma,3 que mientras haya aliento en míy el hálito de Dios esté en mi nariz,4 mis labios no hablarán perversidadni mi lengua proferirá engaño!5 ¡Lejos esté de mí el darles la razón! Hasta que muera, no renunciaréa mi integridad.6 Me he aferrado a mi rectitud y no la cederé.No me reprochará mi corazón mientras viva.7 »Sea como el impío mi enemigo,y como el inicuo el que se levanta contra mí.8 Porque, ¿qué esperanza tiene el impío, por mucho que gane,si Dios le despoja de su vida?9 ¿Escuchará Dios su clamorcuando le sobrevenga la calamidad?10 ¿Se deleitará en el Todopoderoso? ¿Invocará a Dios en todo tiempo?11 »Yo les enseñaré acerca del poderde Dios;no ocultaré lo que concierne al Todopoderoso.12 Si todos ustedes lo han visto, ¿por qué se hacen tan vanos?13 »Esta es la porción de parte de Dios para el hombre impío,la heredad que los tiranosrecibirán de parte del Todopoderoso:14 Aunque sus hijos se hayan multiplicado serán para la espada;y sus vástagos no se saciarán de pan.15 Sus sobrevivientes serán sepultados por la plaga,y sus viudas no llorarán.16 Si amontona plata como polvo,y si prepara ropa como barro,17 él la preparará pero el justo se vestirá con ella,y el inocente repartirá la plata.18 Como la araña[d] edifica él su casa, como la cabaña que hace un guardián.19 Se acostará rico pero dejará de serlo[e]; abrirá sus ojos, y todo habrádesaparecido.20 Los terrores lo alcanzarán como aguas; el huracán lo arrebatará de noche.21 El viento oriental lo levantará y se irá;así lo arrancará de su lugar.22 Dios descargará contra ély no tendrá compasión,y él se esforzará para escaparde su poder.23 Contra él batirá las manos,y silbará contra él desde su lugar.

28 »Ciertamente la plata tiene su mina, y el oro un lugar donde lo refinan;

2 el hierro se extrae del polvo,y el cobre es fundido de la piedra.3 El hombre pone fin a la oscuridad,y examina en los lugares más recónditos las piedras de la oscuridady de las tinieblas.4 Lejos de las poblaciones,en las minas, abre socavonesolvidados por el pie del ser humano, que se descuelgan y se balancean.5 La tierra, de la cual proviene el pan, pero cuyo interior se transforma como con fuego,6 es el lugar cuyas piedras son de zafiroy cuyo polvo es de oro.7 Es una senda que el ave de rapiñano conoceni jamás ha mirado el ojo del halcón.8 Nunca la han pisoteado fieras arrogantes ni por ella caminó el león.9 El hombre extiende su mano hacia el pedernal,y trastorna de raíz las montañas.10 Abre canales en las rocas,y sus ojos ven todo lo preciado.11 Detiene[f] los ríos en sus fuentes,y hace que lo secreto salga a la luz.12 »Pero, ¿dónde se hallará la sabiduría? ¿Dónde está el lugar del entendimiento?13 El hombre no conoce el valor[g] de ella;no se halla en la tierra de los vivientes.14 El océano dice: “Ella no está en mí”.El mar dice: “Tampoco está conmigo”.15 Por ella no se dará oro finoni por su precio se pesará plata.16 No se puede pagar por ellacon oro de Ofirni con ónice precioso ni con zafiro.17 Ni el oro ni el cristal son comparablesa ella;no será dada a cambio de objetos de oro fino.18 El coral y el cristal de roca,ni mencionarlos;pues el valor de la sabiduría es mayor que el de las perlas.19 No será comparado con ella el topacio de Etiopíani se puede pagar por ella con oro fino.20 »¿De dónde, pues, proviene la sabiduría? ¿Dónde está el lugar del entendimiento?21 Está encubierto a los ojos de todo ser viviente;les está oculto a todas las aves del cielo.22 El Abadón[h] y la Muerte dicen: “Su fama hemos oído connuestros oídos”.23 »Solo Dios entiende el camino de ella;él conoce su lugar.24 Porque él contempla los confinesde la tierray ve debajo de todos los cielos.25 Cuando él le dio peso al vientoy determinó la medida de las aguas,26 cuando le dio estatuto a la lluviay camino a relámpagos y truenos,27 entonces él la vio y la declaró;la estableció y también la escudriñó.28 Y dijo al hombre:“Ciertamente el temor del Señor es la sabiduría,y el apartarse del mal es el entendimiento”.
