Job Defends Himself

13 “Behold, my eye has seen all this,My ear has heard and understood it.2 What you know, I also know;I am not inferior to you.3 But I would speak to the Almighty,And I desire to reason with God.4 But you forgers of lies,You are all worthless physicians.5 Oh, that you would be silent,And it would be your wisdom!6 Now hear my reasoning,And heed the pleadings of my lips.7 Will you speak [a]wickedly for God,And talk deceitfully for Him?8 Will you show partiality for Him?Will you contend for God?9 Will it be well when He searches you out?Or can you mock Him as one mocks a man?10 He will surely rebuke youIf you secretly show partiality.11 Will not His [b]excellence make you afraid,And the dread of Him fall upon you?12 Your platitudes are proverbs of ashes,Your defenses are defenses of clay.

13 “Hold[c] your peace with me, and let me speak,Then let come on me what may!14 Why do I take my flesh in my teeth,And put my life in my hands?15 Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him.Even so, I will defend my own ways before Him.16 He also shall be my salvation,For a hypocrite could not come before Him.17 Listen carefully to my speech,And to my declaration with your ears.18 See now, I have prepared my case,I know that I shall be vindicated.19 Who is he who will contend with me?If now I hold my tongue, I perish.

Job’s Despondent Prayer

20 “Only two things do not do to me,Then I will not hide myself from You:21 Withdraw Your hand far from me,And let not the dread of You make me afraid.22 Then call, and I will answer;Or let me speak, then You respond to me.23 How many are my iniquities and sins?Make me know my transgression and my sin.24 Why do You hide Your face,And regard me as Your enemy?25 Will You frighten a leaf driven to and fro?And will You pursue dry stubble?26 For You write bitter things against me,And make me inherit the iniquities of my youth.27 You put my feet in the stocks,And watch closely all my paths.You [d]set a limit for the [e]soles of my feet.

28 “Man[f] decays like a rotten thing,Like a garment that is moth-eaten.

Job Speaks of Life’s Woes

14 “Man who is born of womanIs of few days and full of [g]trouble.2 He comes forth like a flower and fades away;He flees like a shadow and does not continue.3 And do You open Your eyes on such a one,And bring [h]me to judgment with Yourself?4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?No one!5 Since his days are determined,The number of his months is with You;You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass.6 Look away from him that he may [i]rest,Till like a hired man he finishes his day.

7 “For there is hope for a tree,If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,And that its tender shoots will not cease.8 Though its root may grow old in the earth,And its stump may die in the ground,9 Yet at the scent of water it will budAnd bring forth branches like a plant.10 But man dies and [j]is laid away;Indeed he [k]breathes his lastAnd where is he?11 As water disappears from the sea,And a river becomes parched and dries up,12 So man lies down and does not rise.Till the heavens are no more,They will not awakeNor be roused from their sleep.

13 “Oh, that You would hide me in the grave,That You would conceal me until Your wrath is past,That You would appoint me a set time, and remember me!14 If a man dies, shall he live again?All the days of my hard service I will wait,Till my change comes.15 You shall call, and I will answer You;You shall desire the work of Your hands.16 For now You number my steps,But do not watch over my sin.17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag,And You [l]cover my iniquity.

18 “But as a mountain falls and crumbles away,And as a rock is moved from its place;19 As water wears away stones,And as torrents wash away the soil of the earth;So You destroy the hope of man.20 You prevail forever against him, and he passes on;You change his countenance and send him away.21 His sons come to honor, and he does not know it;They are brought low, and he does not perceive it.22 But his flesh will be in pain over it,And his soul will mourn over it.”

Eliphaz Accuses Job of Folly

15 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

2 “Should a wise man answer with empty knowledge,And fill [m]himself with the east wind?3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk,Or by speeches with which he can do no good?4 Yes, you cast off fear,And restrain [n]prayer before God.5 For your iniquity teaches your mouth,And you choose the tongue of the crafty.6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I;Yes, your own lips testify against you.

7 “Are you the first man who was born?Or were you made before the hills?8 Have you heard the counsel of God?Do you limit wisdom to yourself?9 What do you know that we do not know?What do you understand that is not in us?10 Both the gray-haired and the aged are among us,Much older than your father.11 Are the consolations of God too small for you,And the word spoken [o]gently with you?12 Why does your heart carry you away,And [p]what do your eyes wink at,13 That you turn your spirit against God,And let such words go out of your mouth?

14 “What is man, that he could be pure?And he who is born of a woman, that he could be righteous?15 If God puts no trust in His saints,And the heavens are not pure in His sight,16 How much less man, who is abominable and filthy,Who drinks iniquity like water!

17 “I will tell you, hear me;What I have seen I will declare,18 What wise men have told,Not hiding anything received from their fathers,19 To whom alone the [q]land was given,And no alien passed among them:20 The wicked man writhes with pain all his days,And the number of years is hidden from the oppressor.21 [r]Dreadful sounds are in his ears;In prosperity the destroyer comes upon him.22 He does not believe that he will return from darkness,For a sword is waiting for him.23 He wanders about for bread, saying, ‘Where is it?’He knows that a day of darkness is ready at his hand.24 Trouble and anguish make him afraid;They overpower him, like a king ready for [s]battle.25 For he stretches out his hand against God,And acts defiantly against the Almighty,26 Running stubbornly against HimWith his strong, embossed shield.

27 “Though he has covered his face with his fatness,And made his waist heavy with fat,28 He dwells in desolate cities,In houses which no one inhabits,Which are destined to become ruins.29 He will not be rich,Nor will his wealth continue,Nor will his possessions overspread the earth.30 He will not depart from darkness;The flame will dry out his branches,And by the breath of His mouth he will go away.31 Let him not trust in futile things, deceiving himself,For futility will be his reward.32 It will be accomplished before his time,And his branch will not be green.33 He will shake off his unripe grape like a vine,And cast off his blossom like an olive tree.34 For the company of hypocrites will be barren,And fire will consume the tents of bribery.35 They conceive trouble and bring forth futility;Their womb prepares deceit.”

13 »He aquí que todo esto han visto mis ojos;

mis oídos lo han escuchado y entendido.2 Como ustedes lo saben,yo también lo sé;en nada soy menos que ustedes.3 Sin embargo, yo le hablaréal Todopoderosopues quiero argumentar con Dios.4 »En cuanto a ustedes,lo recubren todo con mentira; todos ustedes son médicos inútiles.5 ¡Oh que callaran del todo! Ello les sería contado por sabiduría.6 Escuchen, pues, mi razonamiento,y estén atentos a los argumentos de mis labios.7 ¿A favor de Dios hablarán perversidad? ¿A favor de él hablarán engaño?8 ¿Habrán de mostrar por él parcialidad? ¿Contenderán a favor de Dios?9 ¿Les irá bien cuando él los escudriñe? ¿Acaso se burlarán de élcomo quien se burla de un hombre?10 Ciertamente él los reprobarási en secreto muestran parcialidad.11 ¿No se espantará su majestad,y caerá sobre ustedes su pavor?12 Las máximas de ustedes son proverbios de polvo,y sus defensas son defensas de barro.13 »Callen delante de mí, y yo hablaré me pase lo que me pase.14 ¿Por qué he de arrancar mi carne con mis propios dientes?¿O he de exponer mi vida en mi mano?15 He aquí, aunque él me mateen él[a] he de esperar.Ciertamente defenderé ante su presencia mis caminos.16 Esto también me será salvación, porque un impío no iría a su presencia.17 Oigan con atención mi discurso; oigan con sus oídos mi declaración.18 He aquí que yo he expuesto mi causay sé que seré declarado justo.19 ¿Quién es el que ha de contender conmigo?Pues si ahora yo callara, expiraría.20 »Solo dos cosas no hagas conmigo,oh Dios;entonces no me esconderé de tu rostro:21 Aparta de mí tu mano,y no me espante tu terror.22 Llama, entonces, y yo responderé;o yo hablaré y tú me responderás:23 ¿Cuántas son mis faltas o mis pecados? Hazme entender mi rebelión y mi pecado.24 ¿Por qué escondes tu rostroy me consideras tu enemigo?25 ¿Aterras a una hoja que es arrebatada? ¿Has de perseguir a una paja seca?26 Pues escribes contra mí cosas amargasy me haces sufrir por los pecadosde mi juventud.27 Pones mis pies en el cepoy vigilas todas mis sendas;imprimes marcas en las plantas de mis pies.28 Así el hombre se gasta como un odre, como un vestido comido por la polilla.

14 »El hombre, nacido de mujer, es corto de días y lleno de tensiones.

2 Brota como una flor y se marchita;huye como una sombra y no se detiene.3 ¿Sobre uno así abres tus ojosy lo[b] traes a juicio contigo?4 ¿Quién puede sacar lo limpio de lo impuro? ¡Nadie!5 Ciertamente sus días están determinados y el número de sus meses depende de ti. Tú le has fijado sus límites,los cuales no podrá traspasar.6 Aparta de él tu mirada, y que descanse hasta que, cual un jornalero,haya disfrutado su día.7 »Porque para el árbol hay esperanza;si es cortado, se renovaráy su retoño no dejará de ser.8 Aunque su raíz se envejece en la tierray su tronco muere en el suelo,9 al percibir el agua reverdeceráy echará ramas como planta.10 Pero el hombre muere y desaparece;el hombre expira, ¿y dónde estará[c]?11 Se agotan las aguas de un lago,y un río mengua y se seca;12 así yace el hombre y no se vuelvea levantar.Hasta que no haya más cielos,no lo despertaránni lo levantarán de su sueño.13 »¡Cómo quisiera que me escondieras en el Seol,que me encubrieras hasta que se apaciguara tu furory que fijaras un plazo para acordarte de mí!14 Si el hombre muere, ¿volverá a vivir? Todos los días de mi milicia esperaré hasta que llegue mi relevo.15 Entonces llamarás, y yo te responderé. Añorarás la obra de tus manos.16 Porque ahora me cuentas los pasosy no das tregua a mi pecado.17 Mi transgresión tienes sellada en una bolsay recubres mi iniquidad.18 »Sin embargo, la montaña cae y se deshace,y la peña es removida de su lugar.19 Las aguas desgastan las piedras,y su crecida arrastra el polvo de la tierra; así haces perecer la esperanza del hombre.20 Para siempre prevaleces contra él hasta que se va;desfiguras su rostro y lo despides.21 Si sus hijos alcanzan honraél no lo sabrá.Y si llegan a ser empequeñecidosél no lo percibirá.22 Su cuerpo le da solo dolores,y su alma hace duelo por él.

Segunda intervención de Elifaz

15 Entonces intervino Elifaz el temanita y dijo:

2 —¿Ha de responder el sabio con vano conocimiento?¿Ha de llenar su vientre deviento oriental?3 ¿Ha de argüir con expresiones inútilesy con palabras sin provecho?4 Ciertamente tú disipas la devocióny menoscabas la meditación ante Dios.5 Porque tu iniquidad instruye a tu boca, y adoptas el lenguaje de los astutos.6 Tu boca te condena, no yo,y tus labios testifican contra ti.7 »¿Fuiste tú el primer hombre que nació? ¿Naciste antes que las colinas?8 ¿Has escuchado el secreto de Dios para que solo tú te apropiesde la sabiduría?9 ¿Qué sabes tú que no sepamos nosotros? ¿Qué entendimiento tienesque nosotros no tengamos?10 También entre nosotros hayhombres canosos,hombres muy ancianos,mayores en años que tu padre.11 ¿En tan poco tienes el consuelo de Dios y la palabra que se te dice con ternura?12 ¿Por qué te arrebata tu corazón,y por qué guiñan tus ojos,13 para que vuelvas tu espíritu contra Dios y dejes salir tales palabras de tu boca?14 »¿Qué es el hombre para considerarse limpio;y el nacido de mujer para que se considere justo?15 Si Dios no se fía ni de sus santosni aun los cielos son puros ante sus ojos,16 ¿cuánto menos el abominable y corrupto,el hombre que bebe como aguala iniquidad?17 »Escúchame; yo te informaréy te contaré lo que he visto;18 lo que los sabios nos han revelado sin encubrir nada de lo de sus padres.19 Solo a ellos les fue dada la tierra,y ningún extraño pasó por en mediode ellos.20 El impío se retuerce de dolor todos los días,y un cierto número de añoshan sido reservados para el tirano.21 Voces de espanto resuenan en sus oídos, y aun en la paz vendrá su destructor.22 Él no cree que ha de volverde las tinieblasy que está destinado para la espada.23 Va errante en pos del pandiciendo: “¿Dónde estará?”. Sabe que el día de las tinieblasle está listo, a la mano.24 Lo aterran la tristeza y la aflicción;lo abruman como un rey listopara el ataque.25 Porque ha extendido su mano contra Dios,y se ha comportado con soberbia contra el Todopoderoso.26 Porque embiste contra él concuello erguido,con el doble grosor de su escudo.27 Aunque su cara se cubra de gorduray le crezcan pliegues de grasa en las caderas,28 habitará en ciudades desoladas,en casas donde nadie vivey que están destinadas a ser escombros.29 No se enriquecerá ni le durarán sus bienes;tampoco extenderá su patrimonio sobre la tierra.30 No escapará de las tinieblas.La llama secará sus ramas,y por el soplo de su boca desaparecerá.31 »Que no confíe en la vanidad, engañándose a sí mismo,pues la vanidad será su recompensa.32 Ella se cumplirá antes de su tiempo,y su copa no estará frondosa.33 Como la vid dejará caer sus uvas agraces y arrojará sus flores como el olivo.34 Porque la compañía de los impíos es estéril,y el fuego consumirá las moradas del soborno.35 Conciben afanes y dan a luz iniquidad; sus entrañas preparan el engaño.
