4 And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee.

2 And the Lord said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.

3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it.

4 And the Lord said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand:

5 That they may believe that the Lord God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.

6 And the Lord said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow.

7 And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh.

8 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.

9 And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.

10 And Moses said unto the Lord, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.

11 And the Lord said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the Lord?

12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.

13 And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send.

14 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart.

15 And thou shalt speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.

16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God.

17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand, wherewith thou shalt do signs.

18 And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father in law, and said unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace.

19 And the Lord said unto Moses in Midian, Go, return into Egypt: for all the men are dead which sought thy life.

20 And Moses took his wife and his sons, and set them upon an ass, and he returned to the land of Egypt: and Moses took the rod of God in his hand.

21 And the Lord said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go.

22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord, Israel is my son, even my firstborn:

23 And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will slay thy son, even thy firstborn.

24 And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the Lord met him, and sought to kill him.

25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone, and cut off the foreskin of her son, and cast it at his feet, and said, Surely a bloody husband art thou to me.

26 So he let him go: then she said, A bloody husband thou art, because of the circumcision.

27 And the Lord said to Aaron, Go into the wilderness to meet Moses. And he went, and met him in the mount of God, and kissed him.

28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the Lord who had sent him, and all the signs which he had commanded him.

29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel:

30 And Aaron spake all the words which the Lord had spoken unto Moses, and did the signs in the sight of the people.

31 And the people believed: and when they heard that the Lord had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.

5 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness.

2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the Lord, neither will I let Israel go.

3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the Lord our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.

4 And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens.

5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.

6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,

7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.

8 And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish ought thereof: for they be idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.

9 Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words.

10 And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.

11 Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished.

12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.

13 And the taskmasters hasted them, saying, Fulfil your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.

14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore?

15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants?

16 There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thine own people.

17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go and do sacrifice to the Lord.

18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks.

19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task.

20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:

21 And they said unto them, The Lord look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.

22 And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?

23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.

6 Then the Lord said unto Moses, Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land.

2 And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the Lord:

3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah was I not known to them.

4 And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers.

5 And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant.

6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:

7 And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

8 And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the Lord.

9 And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

10 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

11 Go in, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.

12 And Moses spake before the Lord, saying, Behold, the children of Israel have not hearkened unto me; how then shall Pharaoh hear me, who am of uncircumcised lips?

13 And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, and gave them a charge unto the children of Israel, and unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

14 These be the heads of their fathers' houses: The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel; Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi: these be the families of Reuben.

15 And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman: these are the families of Simeon.

16 And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations; Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari: and the years of the life of Levi were an hundred thirty and seven years.

17 The sons of Gershon; Libni, and Shimi, according to their families.

18 And the sons of Kohath; Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel: and the years of the life of Kohath were an hundred thirty and three years.

19 And the sons of Merari; Mahali and Mushi: these are the families of Levi according to their generations.

20 And Amram took him Jochebed his father's sister to wife; and she bare him Aaron and Moses: and the years of the life of Amram were an hundred and thirty and seven years.

21 And the sons of Izhar; Korah, and Nepheg, and Zichri.

22 And the sons of Uzziel; Mishael, and Elzaphan, and Zithri.

23 And Aaron took him Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, sister of Naashon, to wife; and she bare him Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

24 And the sons of Korah; Assir, and Elkanah, and Abiasaph: these are the families of the Korhites.

25 And Eleazar Aaron's son took him one of the daughters of Putiel to wife; and she bare him Phinehas: these are the heads of the fathers of the Levites according to their families.

26 These are that Aaron and Moses, to whom the Lord said, Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies.

27 These are they which spake to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring out the children of Israel from Egypt: these are that Moses and Aaron.

28 And it came to pass on the day when the Lord spake unto Moses in the land of Egypt,

29 That the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, I am the Lord: speak thou unto Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say unto thee.

30 And Moses said before the Lord, Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips, and how shall Pharaoh hearken unto me?

4 Entonces respondió Moisés y dijo:

—¿Y si ellos no me creen ni escuchan mi voz, sino que dicen: “No se te ha aparecido el SEÑOR”?

2 El SEÑOR le preguntó:

—¿Qué es eso que tienes en tu mano?

Él respondió:

—Una vara.

3 Y él le dijo:

—Tírala al suelo.

Él la tiró al suelo, y se convirtió en una serpiente. Y Moisés huía de ella. 4 Entonces el SEÑOR dijo a Moisés:

—Extiende tu mano y agárrala por la cola.

Él extendió su mano y la agarró, y volvió a ser vara en su mano.

5 —Esto es para que crean que se te ha aparecido el SEÑOR, el Dios de sus padres, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac y el Dios de Jacob. 6 —El SEÑOR también le dijo—: Mete tu mano en tu seno.

Él metió su mano en su seno, y al sacarla, he aquí que su mano estaba leprosa, blanca como la nieve. 7 Entonces le dijo:

—Vuelve a meter tu mano en tu seno.

Él volvió a meter su mano en su seno; y al volver a sacarla de su seno, he aquí que volvió a ser como el resto de su carne.

8 —Y sucederá que si no te creen ni te escuchan a la primera señal, te creerán a la segunda señal. 9 Y sucederá que si no te creen a estas dos señales ni escuchan tu voz, tomarás agua del Nilo y la derramarás en tierra seca. El agua que tomarás del Nilo se convertirá en sangre sobre la tierra seca.

10 Entonces Moisés dijo al SEÑOR:

—Oh Señor, yo jamás he sido hombre de palabras, ni antes ni desde que tú hablas con tu siervo. Porque yo soy tardo de boca y de lengua.

11 El SEÑOR le respondió:

—¿Quién ha dado la boca al hombre? ¿Quién hace al mudo y al sordo, al que ve con claridad y al que no puede ver? ¿No soy yo, el SEÑOR? 12 Ahora pues, ve; y yo estaré con tu boca y te enseñaré lo que has de decir.

13 Y él dijo:

—¡Oh Señor, por favor envía a otra persona!

14 Entonces el furor del SEÑOR se encendió contra Moisés, y le dijo:

—¿No conozco yo a tu hermano Aarón el levita? Yo sé que él habla bien. He aquí que él viene a tu encuentro; y al verte, se alegrará en su corazón. 15 Tú le hablarás y pondrás en su boca las palabras. Yo estaré con tu boca y con la suya, y les enseñaré lo que han de hacer. 16 Él hablará por ti al pueblo y será para ti como boca, y tú serás para él como Dios. 17 Lleva en tu mano esta vara, con la cual harás las señales.

Moisés en camino a Egipto

18 Entonces Moisés se fue y volvió a donde estaba su suegro Jetro y le dijo:

—Permite que yo vaya y vuelva a mis hermanos que están en Egipto, para ver si aún están vivos.

Y Jetro dijo a Moisés:

—Ve en paz.

19 El SEÑOR dijo también a Moisés en Madián:

—Ve, vuélvete a Egipto, porque han muerto todos los que procuraban matarte.

20 Entonces Moisés tomó a su mujer y a sus hijos, los puso sobre un asno y regresó a la tierra de Egipto. Moisés tomó también en su mano la vara de Dios. 21 Y el SEÑOR dijo a Moisés:

—Cuando estés de regreso en Egipto, haz en presencia del faraón todas las señales que he puesto en tu mano. Sin embargo, yo endureceré su corazón, y él no dejará ir al pueblo. 22 Entonces dirás al faraón: “Así ha dicho el SEÑOR: ‘Israel es mi hijo, mi primogénito. 23 Yo te digo que dejes ir a mi hijo para que me sirva. Si rehúsas dejarlo ir, he aquí que yo mataré a tu hijo, a tu primogénito’ ”.

24 Aconteció en el camino, en una posada, que el SEÑOR le salió al encuentro y procuró matarlo. 25 Entonces Séfora tomó un pedernal afilado, cortó el prepucio de su hijo y tocó con él los pies de Moisés, diciendo:

—¡De veras, tú eres para mí un esposo de sangre!

26 Entonces él desistió. Ella había dicho “esposo de sangre” a causa de la circuncisión.

Moisés y Aarón ante el pueblo

27 Entonces el SEÑOR dijo a Aarón:

—Ve al desierto, al encuentro de Moisés.

Él fue y lo encontró en el monte de Dios, y lo besó. 28 Entonces Moisés refirió a Aarón todas las palabras que el SEÑOR lo enviaba a decir y todas las señales que lo mandaba hacer.

29 Moisés y Aarón fueron, y reunieron a todos los ancianos de los hijos de Israel. 30 Aarón relató todas las cosas que el SEÑOR había dicho a Moisés, y este hizo las señales ante los ojos del pueblo. 31 El pueblo creyó; y al oír que el SEÑOR había visitado a los hijos de Israel y que había visto su aflicción, se inclinaron y adoraron.

Moisés y Aarón ante el faraón

5 Después Moisés y Aarón fueron al faraón y le dijeron:

—El SEÑOR, el Dios de Israel, dice así: “Deja ir a mi pueblo para que me celebre una fiesta en el desierto”.

2 Pero el faraón respondió:

—¿Quién es el SEÑOR para que yo escuche su voz y deje ir a Israel? Yo no conozco al SEÑOR ni tampoco dejaré ir a Israel.

3 Ellos le dijeron:

—El Dios de los hebreos ha venido a nuestro encuentro. Permite que vayamos al desierto, a tres días de camino, para ofrecer sacrificios al SEÑOR nuestro Dios, no sea que nos castigue con peste o con espada.

4 Entonces el rey de Egipto les dijo:

—¡Moisés y Aarón! ¿Por qué distraen al pueblo de sus labores? ¡Vuelvan a sus tareas! 5 —Dijo también el faraón—: Ciertamente el pueblo de la tierra es ahora numeroso; no obstante, ustedes los han hecho suspender sus labores.

Se agrava el trabajo del pueblo

6 Aquel mismo día el faraón mandó decir a los capataces del pueblo y a sus vigilantes:

7 —Ya no darán paja al pueblo para hacer los adobes, como hacían antes. ¡Que vayan ellos y recojan por sí mismos la paja! 8 Sin embargo, les impondrán la misma cantidad de adobes que hacían antes. No les disminuirán nada, porque están ociosos. Por eso gritan diciendo: “Vayamos y ofrezcamos sacrificios a nuestro Dios”. 9 Hágase más pesado el trabajo de los hombres, para que se ocupen en él y no presten atención a palabras mentirosas.

10 Los capataces del pueblo y sus vigilantes salieron y hablaron al pueblo diciendo:

—Así ha dicho el faraón: “Yo no les daré paja. 11 Vayan y recojan por ustedes mismos la paja donde la hallen, pero en nada se disminuirá su tarea”.

12 Entonces el pueblo se dispersó por toda la tierra de Egipto para recoger rastrojo en lugar de paja. 13 Y los capataces los apremiaban diciendo:

—Terminen su tarea, lo de cada día en su día, como cuando se les daba paja.

14 Y azotaron a los vigilantes de los hijos de Israel que habían sido puestos por los capataces del faraón, y les dijeron:

—¿Por qué no han completado su cantidad de adobes ni ayer ni hoy, como antes?

15 Los vigilantes de los hijos de Israel fueron al faraón y se quejaron ante él diciendo:

—¿Por qué procedes así con tus siervos? 16 No se da paja a tus siervos, y con todo nos dicen: “¡Hagan adobes!”. He aquí, tus siervos son azotados, cuando la culpa es de tu propio pueblo.

17 Él respondió:

—¡Están ociosos! ¡Sí, ociosos! Por eso dicen: “Vayamos y ofrezcamos sacrificios al SEÑOR”. 18 Vayan, pues, ahora y trabajen. No se les dará paja, pero habrán de entregar la misma cantidad de adobes.

19 Entonces los vigilantes de los hijos de Israel se vieron en aflicción, cuando les dijeron: “No se disminuirá en nada su cantidad diaria de adobes”. 20 Cuando ellos salían del palacio del faraón, se encontraron con Moisés y Aarón, que estaban esperándolos, 21 y les dijeron:

—El SEÑOR los mire y los juzgue, pues nos han hecho odiosos ante los ojos del faraón y los de sus servidores, poniendo en sus manos la espada para que nos maten.

El SEÑOR anuncia su intervención directa

22 Entonces Moisés se volvió al SEÑOR y le dijo:

—Señor, ¿por qué maltratas a este pueblo? ¿Para qué me enviaste? 23 Porque desde que fui al faraón para hablarle en tu nombre, él ha maltratado a este pueblo, y tú no has librado a tu pueblo.

6 El SEÑOR respondió a Moisés:

—Ahora verás lo que yo haré al faraón, porque solo a causa de una poderosa mano los dejará ir. A causa de una poderosa mano los ha de echar de su tierra. 2 —Además, Dios dijo a Moisés—: Yo soy el SEÑOR. 3 Yo me aparecí a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob como Dios Todopoderoso, pero con mi nombre, SEÑOR, no me di a conocer a ellos. 4 Yo también establecí mi pacto con ellos, prometiendo darles la tierra de Canaán, la tierra en la cual peregrinaron y habitaron como forasteros. 5 Asimismo, yo he escuchado el gemido de los hijos de Israel, a quienes los egipcios esclavizan, y me he acordado de mi pacto. 6 Por tanto, di a los hijos de Israel: “Yo soy el SEÑOR. Yo los libraré de las cargas de Egipto y los libertaré de su esclavitud. Los redimiré con brazo extendido y con grandes actos justicieros. 7 Los tomaré como pueblo mío, y yo seré su Dios. Ustedes sabrán que yo soy el SEÑOR su Dios, que los libra de las cargas de Egipto. 8 Yo los llevaré a la tierra por la cual alcé mi mano jurando que la daría a Abraham, a Isaac y a Jacob. Yo se la daré en posesión. Yo el SEÑOR”.

9 De esta manera habló Moisés a los hijos de Israel, pero ellos no escucharon a Moisés, a causa del decaimiento de ánimo y de la dura esclavitud. 10 Entonces el SEÑOR habló a Moisés diciendo:

11 —Ve al faraón rey de Egipto y dile que deje ir de su tierra a los hijos de Israel.

12 Y Moisés respondió al SEÑOR diciendo:

—Si los hijos de Israel no me escuchan, ¿cómo, pues, me escuchará el faraón, siendo yo falto de elocuencia?

13 Entonces el SEÑOR habló a Moisés y a Aarón, y les dio mandamiento para los hijos de Israel y para el faraón rey de Egipto, a fin de sacar a los hijos de Israel de la tierra de Egipto.

Casas paternas de Rubén, Simeón y Leví

14 Estos son los jefes de sus casas paternas:

Los hijos de Rubén, primogénito de Israel, fueron: Hanoc, Falú, Hesrón y Carmi. Estos son los clanes de Rubén.

15 Los hijos de Simeón fueron: Jemuel, Jamín, Ohad, Jaquín, Zojar y Saúl, hijo de la cananea. Estos son los clanes de Simeón.

16 Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Leví, según sus generaciones: Gersón, Cohat y Merari. Los años de la vida de Leví fueron ciento treinta y siete.

17 Los hijos de Gersón fueron Libni y Simei, según sus clanes.

18 Los hijos de Cohat fueron: Amram, Izjar, Hebrón y Uziel. Los años de la vida de Cohat fueron ciento treinta y tres.

19 Los hijos de Merari fueron Majli y Musi.

Estos son los clanes de Leví, según sus generaciones.

20 Amram tomó por mujer a Jocabed su tía, quien le dio a luz a Aarón y a Moisés. Los años de la vida de Amram fueron ciento treinta y siete.

21 Los hijos de Izjar fueron: Coré, Néfeg y Zicri.

22 Los hijos de Uziel fueron: Misael, Elzafán y Sitri.

23 Aarón tomó por mujer a Elisabet hija de Aminadab, hermana de Najsón, quien le dio a luz a Nadab, Abihú, Eleazar e Itamar.

24 Los hijos de Coré fueron: Asir, Elcana y Abiasaf. Estos son los clanes de los coreítas.

25 Eleazar hijo de Aarón tomó por mujer a una de las hijas de Putiel, la cual le dio a luz a Fineas.

Estos son los jefes de las casas paternas de los levitas, según sus clanes. 26 Estos son aquel Aarón y aquel Moisés, a quienes el SEÑOR dijo: “Saquen a los hijos de Israel de la tierra de Egipto, según sus ejércitos”. 27 Ellos son los que hablaron al faraón rey de Egipto para sacar de Egipto a los hijos de Israel. Estos fueron Moisés y Aarón.

Dios recalca la misión de Moisés

28 Sucedió esto el día en que el SEÑOR habló a Moisés en la tierra de Egipto. 29 El SEÑOR habló a Moisés diciendo:

—Yo soy el SEÑOR. Di al faraón, rey de Egipto, todas las cosas que yo te diga a ti.

30 Moisés respondió al SEÑOR:

—He aquí que yo soy un hombre falto de elocuencia; ¿cómo, pues, me escuchará el faraón?
