How to Receive the Holy Ghost

Part 2 -The Solution

 Dr. Diana Brevan

FOCUS

In the first part of this series we looked at the plight of a sinner and the problem a righteous God must overcome by saving him and getting him into heaven.

At the close of our last study in this series, we spoke of Christ’s sacrificial death for us.

In this part I would like to cover, step by step, how we can identify ourselves with the sacrifice which the Lord made and allow our faith to grow so we can be recipients of the wonderful blessings which it has provided.

We need a basic understanding of the scriptural fundamentals of salvation, remember Jesus said in John 7:37-39 that if we believe on him as the scripture has said we shall be filled with the spirit..

A basic understanding of the scriptural fundamentals of salvation will help you to increase your faith to receive the Baptism of the Holy Ghost.

For this reason, we need to take the time to go carefully over this ground, even if we feel it is familiar to us. We cannot lose anything for the time that we spend in close study here, and the benefit to us can be great.

HOW CAN WE KNOW GOD ?

God can only be known by faith.

In John 4:24, Jesus tells us, “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

A spirit cannot be seen, and Jesus in John 3:8, likens the spirit to the wind.

While you can see and feel the effects of the wind, you actually cannot see the wind itself.                               So it is with the spirit of God.

Perhaps one of the reasons that God called Abraham “the father of the faithful” is because Abraham, even though he was surrounded by idolaters who prayed to images placed before them, knelt upon the hillsides and talked out into the empty air, praying to seemingly no one!

Abraham believed that there was one God, an invisible Spirit, present in all places, or as we call it omnipresent.

Abraham believed that this one invisible God, who was an unseen spirit, heard him when he spoke to Him in prayer.

God did hear him, called him His friend, and made of him a great nation.

Because of this, God was known to Abraham through faith.

What Is Faith?

Faith is the most powerful thing in all the world.

Through faith man is able to lay hold of the very power that controls the universe.

By faith, Joshua was able to cause the sun to stand still

By faith, Daniel was delivered from the lions

By faith, Elijah shut up heaven

Although faith is a spiritual essence or foundation, it is so actual and so real that Paul referred to faith as “the substance of things hoped for.”

The thing you desire by faith may not be in hand, but if you have faith, according to the scripture, you have the substance of the thing you desire

What is substance? Consider the potter and the clay

As the potter has the substance of the vase when he holds the unmolded lump of clay in his hand, so if faith.

According to Apostle Paul, if one has faith, he has the evidence, the receipt, the guarantee of the thing that is not yet seen.

But in the final and most simple analysis, faith is simply believing that there is a God and that God will do what He said He would do.

The Apostle Paul stated in Hebrews 11:6, “He that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”

Why Is It So Important to God That a Person Have Faith?

In the letter to the Hebrews, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Without faith it is impossible to please him.”

The inference here is that God is pleased by our faith.

Why is God pleased by our faith?

Because our faith in him is a compliment to His character.

To say that God is almighty, omnipresent, and eternal is to speak of His attributes; but to say that He is altogether trustworthy, that He never fails, and that His promises are never broken, is to pay Him the highest personal compliment.

Since that day in the far past, when there was war in heaven, Satan has tried to hang a shadow over the character of God.

He slyly insinuated to Eve that God had lied to her.

All over the world today people actually doubt God and do not believe He is a “man” of His word.

Even when the Satan attacks your life, it always involves a questioning of God promises in your life

Wherever God can find a person who will take Him at face value and have faith in Him, He is tremendously pleased.

In some way this justifies Him in moving against Satan and casting him out.

Your faith puts you on God’s side, and He is so glad to have you.

You can pay Him no higher compliment to God, than just to believe in Him with all your heart.

Is There Such A Thing As Spiritual Faith and Vain Faith?

As far as salvation and receiving the Baptism of the Holy Ghost is concerned, faith is ineffective unless it is acted upon.

Consider this fact:

Have you ever noticed that before God performed most great                            miracles of the Bible, He required man to demonstrate his faith by a certain            act or deed?

In most instances, the men or women participating in the miracle would have been left in embarrassing and even dangerous circumstances if God had not come through with His part of the bargain.

The Lord wanted them to demonstrate there faith in Him to all present.

He wants you to “believe enough” to ‘stick your neck out’ for him.”

Because of this kind of ”stick your neck out” faith

Noah built an ark at a time when the world had not known rain.

Because of this kind of ”stick your neck out” faith

The Israelites killed a lamb on a certain evening in Egypt                            because they believed a death angel was coming that night.

Because of this kind of ”stick your neck out” faith

Israel marched around Jericho’s walls seven days because they                believed God.

Because of this kind of ”stick your neck out” faith

The servants filled the water pots because they believed Jesus                 would supply the needed wine.

Because of this kind of ”stick your neck out” faith

The blind man was asked to go wash, and the leper was sent to                the priest.

But in all of these instances God seemed to say, “Show men your faith by your works.

Have you ever noticed in the Bible that God requires human participation?

In this way man is able to demonstrate to God, and all concerned, his faith.

Since faith is of spiritual essence or foundation, we cannot see it.

But God sees it !

Jesus said He “saw” the faith of the four men who let the cripple down through the roof.

What he actually saw was the effort which demonstrated their faith.

In their sweating faces and straining muscles Jesus saw their faith.

The Apostle James wrote James , “Though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? . . Shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. . . For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”

James 2:14-26

True faith always demonstrates itself by acting upon that which it believes.

There is a vain faith, which is an incomplete faith which produces no works.

This kind of faith is a mere intellectual agreement to a known spiritual or moral truth.

Look at this example: How many know that “thou shalt not commit adultery” is a spiritual truth, but commit adultery anyway.

This is not a true spiritual faith, a true spiritual faith is that which takes hold of a man’s very soul and being and impels him to act upon that which he holds to be true.

A true spiritual faith will impel, or drive you to action

Did you know the devil has faith?

James said the devil believes and trembles ( James 2:19), but, as we all know, he has not changed his ways.

Many people have the type of faith the devil has—the kind that is inactive and vain.

True faith is active faith.

This is the kind that produces salvation and miracles.

We need to understand this following principle clearly:

Works do not save us, but they demonstrate the faith which does.

If there are no works, the conclusion is there is no faith.

For the scripture declares “Faith without works is dead”.

Faith demonstrated by obedience to the terms of the gospel moves God to forgive us of our sins, justify us, and fill us with His Spirit.

The statement given by Jesus to Nicodemus in John 3:5 is applicable to us today: “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

While this scripture is often quoted, it is very seldom spelled out as to how it can be performed.

How can a man be born of water and of the Spirit?

The apostle Peter at the setting up of the New Testament church told us, in three easy steps, how one can be born of water and of the Spirit: “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost”

(Acts 2:38).

The whole of the wonderful experience is not complete until all three steps are taken.

For the sake of clarity, we are going to briefly take each of these three steps and examine them closely.

Repentance

The first step to be taken in the process of the new birth is repentance.

Repentance is brought about by godly sorrow over our sins.

It is an honest confession of those sins to God

and a resolute turning away from them.

Someone put it like this: “It is being so sorry for our sins that we decide to quit them and never do them again.”

The promise of God is, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

(1 John 1:9)

Did you notice the words “faithful and just”?

God has bound himself under a promise that He will forgive all who confess their sins.

Jesus said:  and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.”

(John 6:37 NKJV)

Paul adds his own assurance, “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”

(1 Timothy 1:15)

No sinner has ever come to Jesus and been turned away.

If I had been the only sinner in the whole world Jesus would have died just for me.

If He loves us enough to die for us, you know He loves us enough to forgive us when we ask Him.

It is good that we get down on our knees and confess to God every sin we can think of.

Each of them is terrible enough in character to send our souls to hell.

Each of them is a black and hideous crime against a pure and holy God.

With utmost honesty and sincerity we should confess these sins to God and humbly implore Him to forgive us of these sins and help us never to do them again.

This confession puts everything in the open between us and God.

It demonstrates that we are acting in good faith.

A repenting person should continue to repent until he feels that God has forgiven him.

Our hearts should be searched and our souls and lives made bare before Him.

We should also ask forgiveness for those sins which we cannot remember committing.

Without question or doubt, God will forgive us when we come to him humbly and honestly.

The moment a person fully repents is the moment that God fully forgives.

The question in forgiveness is not God’s willingness to do so but the sinner’s attitude toward his sin.

When repentance is complete, and God has forgiven you, you will know it. There comes with forgiveness a sense of tremendous relief, a feeling of a great load lifted.

Forgiveness effected between two estranged parties is always a sweet thing. Just think about someone who you have had a disagreement with in the past, when that was settled and the animosity and bad blood is gone it felt good.

But let me add this, there are some who feel they are so unworthy or so evil that God cannot forgive them, for those, forgiveness must be accepted by faith after repentance.

But forgiveness in and of itself is not salvation.

A wrong attitude of the sinner toward God and his sin has simply been rectified.

The air is cleared to the point that the seeker is now on speaking terms with God.

The seeker’s sin, which was the major hindrance to communication between him and God, has honestly been faced and dealt with, and now the candidate for salvation is in a position to proceed further.

I am very sorry to say that many good, sincere people have taken repentance for full New Testament salvation and have thus fallen short of heaven’s best.

Repentance and forgiveness are only

the first steps in the new birth process.

Let me use an illustration to illustrate this point:

Suppose that on a given night Joe Jones, walking along a dark street, suddenly turns into the home of a very devout Christian whom we shall call Sam Smith.

Now Sam is working an evening shift, and when Mrs. Smith opens the door at Joe’s knock, he immediately kills her with one pistol shot in the heart.

Stepping over the dead body, he proceeds coldly and methodically to murder the four children who are a part of the Smith family.

Of course, Brother Smith was shocked beyond words and overwhelmed by grief later that night when he discovered the pitiful sight of his family, bloody and cold in death.

The police were not long in arresting Joe.

Sam Smith went down to see him at the jail. When Joe discovered that he was in the presence of the man he had left wifeless and childless, he cowered back from the bars, trembling and begging forgiveness. Sam Smith, being a genuine Christian, frankly forgave him then and there.

In order to suggest that repentance creates no merit at all for us, I would point out that all credit in this act of forgiveness must go to the man who has been sinned against and yet forgives.

The culprit is not to be congratulated at all in asking to be forgiven.

It was the least he could do.

Even though Joe repented and was forgiven, repentance and forgiveness did not absolve the problem his sin had created.

There was a legal question to be settled.

Joe Jones, though forgiven, remained a murderer, with justice yet to be satisfied.

His repentance and subsequent forgiveness was the first step in reconciling him to the man he had wronged.

Through Joe’s repentance, communication was established between Joe and Sam, so that the culprit could be further helped, but society would demand justice. Repentance did not help Sam, his wife and children were still dead, repentance helped Joe to begin to clear his conscience

Through this illustration we see that the first step to be made toward God is repentance, which creates no personal merit for us but clears the way for further demonstration of our faith and good will in our approach to God.

Repentance indicates a change of heart and a turning away from the old sinful way of life and practice.

Through repentance we identify ourselves with the death of Jesus Christ.

This act on our part is a clear indication of our faith in God’s willingness to forgive us of our sins.

Baptism

The next step of the new birth process which Peter mentioned in Acts 2:38 was baptism in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.

Baptism plays a very important role in New Testament salvation.

Baptism further demonstrates the saving faith of the candidate.

Faith and baptism cannot be separated. Notice Jesus’ words in Mark 16:16, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.”

In baptism we enter into the absoluteness of Christ’s death.

The old man who died at repentance is decidedly acknowledging to be dead to sin by burial in water into the name of Jesus Christ.

Paul in Romans refers to baptism in Jesus’ name as being buried with Him and as being “planted together in the likeness of his death.”

Baptism is not just an act but a continuing along in the relationship you entered into with Jesus Christ when you repented of your sins.

Notice again the positive, close wedding of the sinner to Christ in baptism: “Baptized into Christ”; “Buried with Him”; and “Planted together.” Romans 6:3-5

May I suggest that there is someone else in the baptismal tank besides the minister and the candidate. Jesus is also there.

The candidate and Jesus are in the holy relation, planted together in the likeness of His death, so that they might also be in the likeness of His resurrection. It is here in repentance and baptism, as Paul describes in Romans 6:6-7, that the body of sin is destroyed, and we are freed from our sin.

Going back to our illustration:

While Joe Jones was on the death row waiting his execution, a governor’s pardon would come to him so that he could go free.

In our case Jesus Christ, the one who created us and made the laws which we had broken, came and died at the hands of those laws He had made, so that we could have pardon.

We show our appreciation and our faith in the power of His death and burial when, when go into the waters of baptism, and through his name and faith in his name, our sins are remitted.

There is a legal arrangement made whereby they are removed or remitted.

Our baptism into His death is a demonstration of our faith that we accept His death as our death on a substitutionary basis as symbolically as that old testament lamb took on the sins of the Israelite who offered the sacrifice. Except in our case the sacrifice was already made and we accept his substitutionary death in our place through baptism.

Lets go back to our illustration:

When Joe Jones leaves the penitentiary with his pardon, not all of his problems are over. He knows, and everyone else knows, that he is nothing more than a pardoned criminal. While he has been released from confinement, he has by no means been restored to the good graces and confidence of society. He is free from prison but not from his conscience. Forgiveness and pardon are two great blessings, but Joe Jones finds that complete restoration is quite another thing altogether.

Baptism of the Holy Ghost

Even after repentance, which secures forgiveness, and after baptism, which remits our sin, there is need of an expression from God, an act of wonderful divine acceptance which finally and completely changes the status of the sinner.

This is found in the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

This wonderful transformation has its counterpart in the resurrection of Jesus from the grave when He arose with a new and different body.

The Apostle Paul wrote, “If there be no resurrection, then. . . your faith is also vain.”                                                                               1 Corinthians 15:14

What did the resurrection of Christ accomplish?

The resurrection demonstrated that Jesus Christ had power and authority to take care of the sin question.

He paid the penalty for all, and His resurrection showed His payment was sufficient.

He met divine requirements, and the courts of death and hell could not legally contain Him.

Death and hell had no legal claim against Him.

David said, “It was not possible that he should be holden of it.” The resurrection proved Christ’s ability beyond doubt.

Receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost is unmistakable proof of God’s acceptance and clearance of the sinner.

Lets go back to our illustration:

Suppose Joe Jones could have somehow stepped into a time machine, which in some way would have changed him into another man, so that neither his past nor his former identity could have been, in any way, connected with him; if the cycle of time could have been reversed to that particular night on that particular street, so that the horrible deed could be erased, then it could be said that he was completely absolved from his guilt.

With forgiveness, a pardon, and a transformation, all his problems would be solved.

God not only fills with the Holy Ghost, but also at that instant He gives to the candidate something he never had nor could ever get with his own effort though he worked a million years.

It is the righteousness of God.

Paul describes it in Romans 3:22, “Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe.”

In some strange and wonderful way, through the operation of faith, God’s very righteousness becomes yours.

In that divine act you are at that moment lifted in status above angels and exalted to the position of a joint heir with Jesus Christ Himself.

The Bible calls this justification.

You are not simply cleared as a man may be at court but so thoroughly restored that it is as if it were not you at all.

In these three acts of faith: repentance, baptism, and receiving the Holy Ghost, you become so thoroughly identified with Christ that it is as if Jesus did all the wrong, and you, in all things, stand completely innocent.

The man who performed the evil deeds died in Christ and was buried in Him as surely as if your body had actually died and, after a public funeral, been buried.

Jesus called it a complete new birth.

As if a man were just at that moment born! As if he had never lived before!

The reasoning is, “How could a man have sin against him if he had never existed until that moment?”

How wonderful to know that when your faith reaches up in such simplicity and purity that it effects the pouring out of the Holy Ghost upon you, and at once, so far as God is concerned, you are made as righteous as He!

Since the turn of the century it is millions of people have received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost.

By faith, you can have it too! Dr.Diana Brevan @ Jesus Is Lord Fellowship WWI Where Jesus Is Lord!
