Praise and Worship:

Do It Again

Walking around these walls

I thought by now they’d fall

But You have never failed me yet

Waiting for change to come

Knowing the battle’s won

For You have never failed me yet

Your promise still stands

Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness

I’m still in Your hands

This is my confidence

You’ve never failed me yet

I know the night won’t last

Your word will come to pass

My heart will sing Your praise again

Jesus You’re still enough

Keep me within Your love, oh

My heart will sing Your praise again

(Oh, yes, it will)

Your promise still stands

Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness

I’m still in Your hands

This is my confidence

You’ve never failed

Your promise still stands

Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness

I’m still in Your hands

This is my confidence

You’ve never failed me yet

Never failed me yet

Oh, oh-oh

I’ve seen You move, You move the mountains

And I believe I’ll see You do it again

You made a way, where there was no way

And I believe I’ll see You do it again

I’ve seen You move, You move the mountains

And I believe I’ll see You do it again

You made a way, where there was no way

And I believe I’ll see You do it again

I’ve seen You move, You move the mountains

And I believe I’ll see You do it again

You made a way, where there was no way

And I believe I’ll see You do it again

I’ll see You do it again

Your promise still stands

Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness

I’m still in Your hands

This is my confidence

You’ve never failed

Your promise still stands

Great is Your faithfulness, faithfulness

I’m still in Your hands

This is my confidence

You’ve never failed me yet

Oh, You’ve never failed me yet

And I never will forget

You’ve never failed me yet

And I never will forget

What Do I Have that God Wants?

Part Six: Our Praise

Introduction

PRAISE THE LORD!

Now I have a question for you – is this statement a tradition or a command? In other words when I say, “Praise the Lord!” What does it mean? Does it mean to just say – Amen? Or does it mean what it says – PRAISE THE LORD! Now I am not trying to trick you or get you confused but I want us to think about this three 3-word phrase that has become engrained into our Christian vocabulary.

Let’s try a little experiment (I promise this won’t hurt)! When I say PRAISE THE LORD – I want you to PRAISE THE LORD. Now take a moment to think about what I am asking you to do, I don’t want you to just respond with an AMEN but I want you to give praise to God. Are you ready?

PRAISE THE LORD!

Now I want us to read from the 100th Psalm – it is called a Psalm of Thanksgiving

Psalm 100:1 Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands! 2 Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. 3 Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture. 4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name. 5 For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.

Thursday night I asked a question to those who were here - “What Do I Have that God Wants?” We started out by saying He wants “US” spirit, soul and body. Today I want to let you know that God wants “Our Praise.” That is why we have looked at this Psalm of Thanksgiving because all praise begins with one thing – BEING THANKFUL!

As a matter of fact I have always been taught that there are three levels or stages that lead us into the presence of God:

1. Thanksgiving – an attitude of thankfulness for what God has done.

2. Praise - acknowledging what God is.

3. Worship – personal interaction with the presence of God.

Let’s take a look at these and see if we can discover a breakthrough in our worship.

THANKSGIVING

Have you ever left to go somewhere then about halfway there you realized you were going the wrong direction? My wife and I were on our way home from the Sandton (which is in the north of Johannesburg) the other day and before I knew it I was heading for Pretoria instead of Johannesburg. So we had to turn around and get going in the right direction.

You see before we can ever get going in the right direction toward worship we must begin by going in the direction of thanksgiving. What does it mean to be thankful? What am I speaking of when I say – thanksgiving? Well, it is a pretty simple concept that can be explained in one word – REMEMBERING! Being thankful means I am simply remembering those things the Lord has done for me!

 The times He has blessed me

 The times He has healed me

 The times He has provided for my needs

 The times He has forgiven me of my sins

 The times He has encouraged me

 The times He has given me courage and strength to face the world

Being thankful is to remember what GOD HAS DONE! It means that I don’t become selfish with the blessings of God but I celebrate His abundant provision in my life. What has the Lord done for you!

SOMEBODY STAND UP RIGHT NOW AND TELL ME JUST ONE THING THE LORD HAS DONE FOR YOU!

What happens if I choose to not be THANKFUL for the things of God? Well let me read what the Word of the Lord says about it…

Romans 1:21 …because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.

When we choose to not give all the thanks unto the Lord we see that unthankfulness is the beginning of many other bigger problems in our life. Most sin can be traced back to unthankfulness – the result of not being thankful is terrible…look at how these people are described by Paul…

 Futile in their thoughts

 Their hearts are darkened

 Change the glory of God into images of man, birds, beasts and creeping things

 They become controlled by lust and dishonor their bodies (piercing the body, homosexuality, perverted sexual ways)

 Exchanged truth for lies

 Became FILLED with unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, envy, murder, strife, deceit, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful

 They become worthy of death.

All of this because they refused to be thankful for what the Lord had done in their lives. The Bible tells us that one of the signs of the return of Jesus Christ is UNTHANKFULNESS! When we look at the world today we can see this coming to pass.

If you are struggling to praise God, maybe you feel as if you are bound in your praise unto the Lord then the first thing to check is your thankfulness.

SOMEBODY STAND UP RIGHT NOW AND GIVE THANKS FOR ONE THING THE LORD HAS DONE IN YOUR LIFE!

PRAISE

Thankfulness leads us into praise…look at Psalm 100 again…

Psalm 100: 4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

Praise is the expression of thanks – it is putting some action to our thankfulness. When we praise the Lord we do more than just remember or recall what He has done but being thankful for who He IS! He is:

 My all in all

 My king

 My Lord

 My God

 My ever present help in times of trouble

 My way maker

 My hope

 He is all of these things and so much more…

But how do I express my thanks for what He is? Praise is expressing on the outside what we feel toward God on the inside. Praise is action – it is clapping our hands, lifting our voices, raising our hands to Him, playing music, dancing before the Lord. There are more ways than just this but if we can just get started with these few things then we will be off to a great start.

I need my readers to come now and read the scriptures that have been assigned to you!

Giving God praise with our voice…

1. Psalm 35:28

2. Psalm 40:3

3. Psalm 89:1

Giving God praise with music and instruments…

1. Psalm 33:2

2. Psalm 47:1

3. Psalm 150:3-5

Giving God praise with action…

1. Psalm 63:4

2. Acts 3:8

3. Psalm 149:3

200 times in the Word of God we are told to PRAISE God! But you know sometimes I just don’t FEEL like praising God. It is in these times that we crucify the flesh and offer a sacrifice of praise unto the Lord. Sometimes the voice just doesn’t want to lift praises to the Lord – you will just have to get your voice to submit to the Spirit of God within you and make a joyful noise unto the Lord. Sometimes the cares of life and the problems we are facing want to steal God’s praise – the Devil is not so much concerned about the experience you are having today as much as he is concerned with stealing your next experience with God. IF he can just get you to stop – then he has won the battle! But we can’t stop praising the Lord! The prophet Habakkuk was having a bad time and just didn’t want to praise the Lord. But under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost he penned these words for our learning…

Habakkuk 3:17 Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls- 18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. 19 The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer's feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills.

It matters little how bad the world is, how bad we think we’ve got it or what circumstance we are facing at this very moment – God WANTS – He DESIRES our praise. Sometimes you may not feel like praising the Lord but do it anyhow and breakthrough the flesh…David said,

Psalm 119:164 Seven times a day I do praise thee.

What would happen if SEVEN times every day we just stopped for a moment and gave God some praise. NO matter who was around, who could see, what others might think – we just stopped what we were doing and gave God some praise.

LET’S GET A LITTLE PRACTICE AT PRAISE

 (5) PEOPLE STAND AND JUST CLAP YOUR HANDS TO THE LORD

 (5) PEOPLE STAND UP AND JUST BEGIN TO SING UNTO THE LORD (What A Mighty God We Serve!)

 (5) PEOPLE STAND UP AND RAISE YOUR HANDS TO THE LORD

 (10) PEOPLE STAND UP AND JUST BEGIN TO DANCE BEFORE THE LORD

I know it might feel awkward now but as we practice praising the Lord it will become as natural as breathing.

To be concluded on Sunday.
