Fasting for Spiritual Breakthrough
Lesson 7
Four thoughts come from this portion of the fast:
• Backsliders are blinded to sin in their lives. They are generally willfully ignorant of an obligation to God.
• Backsliders are careless about sin in their lives. The fact that a person may have “gotten away” with some of their sin will provide more confidence to take more steps away from God.
• During fasting, God can show hidden sin to the believer—a sin that very well could be prohibiting God’s blessings.
• More adjustments that we need to take are revealed as we continue the Samuel Fast. Fasting has to be an ongoing process, meaning that we have to have a consistent level of fasting weekly or at least monthly.
Sometimes one may fast for two or more separate days, separated by a time of eating. Whereas a two-day fast may produce an intensive examination for sin, there are advantages of two separate days of fasting. The time we spend between our fasts provides opportunity to think through the ramifications of our needs, and our sins may become clearer to us. However it happens, fasting must be more than a one-time event. It must be an action we employ throughout our lives.
The effect of secret sin in our lives can be extremely dangerous. During my days in working in the Intensive Care Units, I noticed that there were a number of victims who would come in from trauma situations. Generally, they would have some blow to the chest and lung region and would exhibit a very small amount of bruising on the outside the problem was with the inside. Their lungs would have been insulted in such a way that the bruising would cause the tiny air sacs within their lungs not to make a proper oxygen/carbon-dioxide exchange. These patients would generally be ventilated with life support but no matter if we were delivering 100% oxygen to them, they could not make the necessary exchange and therefore no oxygen was getting to the vital organs and tissue.
The sad tale of their hospital course would be told by their morning chest X-rays. You would notice throughout that the lung fields were not as sharply defined and a massive “whiteout” would be present on this X-ray. This is commonly referred to as Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome or ARDS. It has been my experiencee that very, very few patients who were actively diagnosed with this actually lived. The right equipment was present. The highly trained medical staff in the ICU’s knew what they were doing. The high concentration of oxygen was being delivered but the traumatized body simply could not assimilate what was being delivered to it.
This is what happens when one struggles with secret sin. No matter how powerful the worship may be or the prayers or the singing or the preaching, if the spirit cannot interact with the Spirit then spiritual death will occur. That is why that this single principle in the Samuel Fast is so crucial. God can bring to light exactly what is necessary for us to be delivered from but it will not come until secret sin is exposed and dealt with. You must separate yourself from secret sin.
• STEP 4: Have Corporate Confession of Sin
There are some who hold the view that there is no such thing as corporate sin. They hold that sin is something that is done on an individual basis. While that view is certainly valid, Scripturally there are several examples where one notes that sin was confessed for the group as a whole.
Numbers 14:40 KJV And they rose up early in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned. (For hesitation about going into the Promised Land.)
Numbers 21:7 KJV Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. (For murmuring against Moses and Lord. Fiery serpents were sent to punish them.)
Jeremiah 14:7 KJV O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee. (For their numerous backslidings over the course of time.)
Daniel 9:5 KJV We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:
When you confess ‘we have sinned’ in private, you are included in that sin. When the group prays together, God responds to that group. However, I must interject that I do not believe it is profitable to bring a “laundry list” and air out all of the offenses and mistakes that have occurred in the past. I believe that for the spiritual health of that Church that, as a body, the words “we have sinned” is sufficient enough for God to break through and pour revival out on the Church .
