Good Morning!
Luke 18:18-23
18 Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: “Good teacher, what should I do to get eternal life?” 19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “Only God is truly good. 20 But as for your question, you know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery. Do not murder. Do not steal. Do not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother.’” 21 The man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was a child.” 22 “There is still one thing you lack,” Jesus said. “Sell all you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 23 But when the man heard this, he became sad because he was very rich.

Why was it very hard for the rich person to hear from Jesus, that he must sell everything and give it to the poor or that he must come and follow Jesus? Whatever was more difficult for him, he could not do either. There was no question that he did not understand exactly what Jesus was asking, only sadness because it was the thing he would not give. The rich man was more devoted to the idea of Jesus than to Jesus Himself. If he had been willing to obey, this man would have found treasures that could not be compared to what he already had. Christ does ask us to surrender anything He has not already surrendered. Hebrews 5:8 states, “So even though Jesus was God’s Son, He learned obedience from the things He suffered.” Jesus Christ gave up all this world could offer to give us a right relationship with God the Father. This man could not see that life was more than what we own in this world. But he did understand what a right relationship would cost him. It would cost him his will and that would require obedience to God. He walked away very sad because he did understand. Because Christ suffered and gave up so much for us, can we do any less for Him? What is He asking of you today that is difficult to surrender? Don’t be like this man and walk away, but give all that God would ask. Remember He would never require your obedience, if He Himself had not been willing to do the same.
